Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Section 1: Understanding Route to Shopper® and the Shopurai™ Concept
What is Route to Shopper®?
Route to Shopper® is the systematic methodology for creating shopper-focused value through integrated brand and retail collaboration. Created by Ankur Shiv Bhandari, it is built on the principle that sustainable commercial growth happens when brands and retailers stop talking past each other and start designing strategies around how shoppers actually think, decide and buy.
Route to Shopper® is a complete discipline. It consists of 79 structured frameworks called kata, organised into two complementary frameworks: GUIDE™ for brand professionals and PATHS™ for retail professionals. Together, GUIDE™ and PATHS™ bring Route to Shopper® to life. They give every commercial practitioner a rigorous, structured and practical system for applying shopper-focused thinking in their day-to-day work, whether they sit on the brand side, the retail side or both.
What is GUIDE™ and what is PATHS™?
GUIDE™ is the brand-side framework within Route to Shopper®. It contains 25 core modules and 4 bonus modules organised across five pillars: Grow the Shopper Base, Unlock Bigger Baskets, Increase Purchase Cycles, Drive Sustainable Profits and Enable Cross-Functional Excellence.
PATHS™ is the retail-side framework within Route to Shopper®. It contains 50 modules organised across five pillars: Presentation Excellence, Assortment Optimisation, Team Engagement, Holistic Supplier Integration and Shopper Insight Application.
GUIDE™ and PATHS™ are not two separate programmes. They are two perspectives on the same commercial reality. A Shopurai™ practitioner who ultimately masters both holds a rare and powerful dual lens that most commercial professionals never develop.
What is a Shopurai™?
A Shopurai™ is a commercial professional who has committed to mastering Route to Shopper®. The term blends “shopper” and “samurai” to reflect the core philosophy: mastery is earned through disciplined, long-term practice, not short-term attendance. Shopurai™ practitioners follow the Bushido of Commerce, a seven-principle code that governs how they apply their skills with integrity, ensuring that mastery creates genuine value for brands, retailers and shoppers alike rather than being used to manipulate or exploit.
What is the Bushido of Commerce?
The Bushido of Commerce is the seven-principle code that every Shopurai™ practitioner commits to. Modelled on the traditional samurai code, it governs how Route to Shopper® frameworks are applied in real commercial situations. Adherence to the code is what distinguishes a Shopurai™ from someone who simply knows the frameworks. It is the values layer of the entire discipline.
Who is the Shopurai™ Belt Journey designed for?
The journey is designed for sales professionals first and foremost, alongside commercial directors, category managers and retail professionals working in Consumer Goods and Retail. If you are in a role where your success depends on convincing a retailer to back your range, or on building a commercial plan that genuinely connects products to how shoppers behave, the Shopurai™ Belt Journey gives you the structured mastery system your career needs. Whether you sit on the brand side, the retail side or both, there is a clear structured path for you. If you believe shopper-focused thinking is the defining commercial skill of the next decade, this journey is for you.
Is this relevant if I already have many years of commercial experience?
Yes, and your experience will accelerate your progression. However, Route to Shopper® is a specific discipline. Just as a black belt in karate begins at white belt when entering a judo dojo, your Shopurai™ Belt Journey always starts at Peach Belt. Years of experience mean you will move through early levels faster and with greater depth of application. They do not bypass the system.
Section 2: The Shopurai™ Belt System
What is the Shopurai™ Belt System?
The Shopurai™ Belt System is the ten-level progression framework that maps your journey from commercial novice to Route to Shopper® master. Each level corresponds to a belt colour and a stage of the customer relationship journey, from Peach at Level 1 through to Purple at Level 10. The system provides clear milestones, a visual progression spectrum and a structured pathway spanning 30 to 36 months from Peach to Purple.
Each belt is structured around a specific pillar of either GUIDE™ or PATHS™, ensuring your progression is always grounded in practical, applicable knowledge rather than abstract theory.
What are the ten belt levels?
The ten levels of the Shopurai™ Belt System are:
- Level 1: Peach Belt (Prospect / Awareness)
- Level 2: Apricot Belt (Acquaintance / Engagement)
- Level 3: Tangerine Belt (Trial / Application)
- Level 4: Ruddy Belt (Regular / Refinement)
- Level 5: Ochre Belt (Ongoing / Execution Peak)
- Level 6: Nectarine Belt (Nurturing / Optimisation)
- Level 7: Scarlet Belt (Supporter / Influence)
- Level 8: Heliotrope Belt (Herald / Strategic Insight)
- Level 9: Indigo Belt (Insider / Innovation)
- Level 10: Purple Belt (Partner / Mastery)
What do the Warm Tones and Cool Tones phases mean?
Levels 1 to 5 (Peach to Ochre) are the Warm Tones phase. During this phase, Brand Shopurai master the GUIDE™ framework kata and Retail Shopurai master the PATHS™ framework kata. You are building deep expertise in your native commercial perspective, the side of the commercial equation where you already operate.
Levels 6 to 9 (Nectarine to Indigo) are the Cool Tones phase. Here, Brand Shopurai cross into PATHS™ mastery (the retail perspective) and Retail Shopurai cross into GUIDE™ mastery (the brand perspective). This dual-path integration is what makes advanced Shopurai™ practitioners uniquely equipped to lead genuine collaboration across the commercial divide.
Level 10, Purple Belt, represents full integration of all 79 kata and qualifies practitioners for Sensei consideration.
How long does each belt level take?
Early belt levels typically take 2 to 4 months each. Later levels, particularly those in the Cool Tones phase where you are integrating the partner perspective, take 3 to 5 months. The full journey from Peach to Purple is designed to be completed in 30 to 36 months with consistent discipline. The system accommodates the realities of working life without removing the rigour that makes the credential meaningful.
What is a kata?
A kata is a framework and module within Route to Shopper®. The word comes from martial arts tradition, where a kata is a precise sequence of movements practised repeatedly until it becomes instinctive. In the Shopurai™ context, a kata is a structured commercial framework you study, apply in your real work environment and demonstrate mastery of before advancing. There are 79 kata in total across GUIDE™ and PATHS™.
Section 3: How Each Belt Works — Digital and Physical Components
What are the two components of every belt?
Every belt in the Shopurai™ Belt System has two distinct components: Digital and Physical.
The Digital component includes the Overview Video for the relevant pillar, the Study Guides for each module within that pillar and the e-learning for all modules in that pillar. These are completed at your own pace through your Academy dashboard. You must complete all Digital components for a pillar and pass the associated assessments before you become eligible to progress to the Physical component.
The Physical component is the in-person workshop for that belt level. It is not a lecture. It is a rigorous, facilitated working session that stress-tests your learning and applies your kata knowledge in collaborative settings with other Shopurai™ practitioners.
What is the connection between belts and pillars?
Each belt maps directly to a specific pillar within your pathway framework. For a Brand Shopurai, Peach Belt corresponds to the G pillar (Grow the Shopper Base) within GUIDE™. To earn the Peach Belt, a Brand Shopurai must complete all Digital components across every module in the G pillar first. Only on successful completion of the Digital component does the Physical workshop registration become available.
The same principle applies at every belt level across all ten belts, with Brand Shopurai progressing through GUIDE™ pillars in Levels 1 to 5 and PATHS™ pillars in Levels 6 to 9, and Retail Shopurai following the mirror path.
What happens between the Digital component and the Physical workshop?
Once you have completed all Digital components for a pillar, two things happen before your Physical workshop. First, OJT (On the Job Training) templates become available. These are structured templates that require you to apply the kata you have studied directly in your real workplace. Completing and uploading your OJT evidence is the gateway to registering for your Physical workshop. After the workshop concludes, you enter the Action Plan phase, where you document and demonstrate the real-world commercial impact of your learning. Successful completion of the Action Plan is what triggers your belt advancement.
Can I attend the Physical workshop without completing the Digital component first?
No. The gate between Digital and Physical is non-negotiable. Completing all e-learning modules, study guide engagement and Digital assessments for a pillar at the required standard is what makes your OJT templates accessible, and OJT completion is what makes Physical workshop registration possible. The integrity of the belt designation depends on this sequence being honoured.
What is the four-stage mastery cycle in full?
The four stages every belt requires are:
- Digital: Overview Video, Study Guides and e-learning for all modules in the pillar, completed to the required pass standard with reflections submitted
- OJT: Structured On the Job Training templates applied in your workplace and uploaded as evidence
- Physical Workshop: Three-day in-person programme
- Action Plan: Evidence-based documentation of real commercial application
Belt advancement is awarded on completion of all four stages in sequence.
Section 4: Pearl Shopurai™ and Getting Started
What is Pearl Shopurai™?
Pearl Shopurai™ is the entry designation for Academy members who have joined the Route to Shopper® world but have not yet enrolled in the formal Shopurai™ Belt System. Think of it as walking into the dojo, putting on the gi and beginning to learn before you formally commit to belt progression. Pearl sits before the Shopurai™ Belt System begins. Pearl members are part of the Shopurai™ community and receive access to a curated set of Digital resources and community benefits to help them decide which belt pathway is right for them.
What does a Pearl Shopurai™ membership include?
Pearl membership includes:
- Access to selected Digital products within the Academy, including overview-level content to orient you within the Route to Shopper® methodology
- Access to the exclusive Shopurai™ community (forums, peer networking and study groups)
- Monthly live webinars with Ankur Shiv Bhandari covering framework deep-dives, industry insights and Q&A
- Content updates as new material is added
- A progress tracking dashboard
- Your Pearl Shopurai™ digital badge and community profile designation (pearl white / iridescent profile colour)
What is NOT included in Pearl Shopurai™ membership?
Pearl membership does not grant access to the full module-level e-learning library across all pillars. Full module access is unlocked through Belt System enrolment. Pearl membership also does not include OJT templates, which unlock only through Belt enrolment, or Physical workshop registration, which requires completion of the relevant Digital component first.
How do I take the first step?
Begin with the Commercial Excellence (RiPe) Scorecard. The scorecard evaluates your current capability across the Route to Shopper® GUIDE™ framework and generates your Commercial Excellence Score. Your score reveals your current capability profile and determines your recommended entry point, whether that is Pearl Shopurai™ membership, direct Belt enrolment or an accelerated assessment pathway for more experienced practitioners.
What is the Commercial Excellence (RiPe) Scorecard?
The Commercial Excellence (RiPe) Scorecard is a free diagnostic tool that measures your current commercial capability across the five pillars of the GUIDE™ framework. RiPe refers to the Readiness and Performance formula that underpins the scoring methodology. Your score is returned as a Commercial Excellence Score with a breakdown by pillar, showing you exactly where your strengths lie and where your most significant capability gaps are. It takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and is the recommended starting point for every prospective Shopurai™ practitioner.
Section 5: Recognition and What You Earn
What do I receive when I advance a belt level?
On advancing each belt level you receive a physical belt in your new belt colour, embroidered with Route to Shopper® and Shopurai™ and featuring the Shopurai™ crest at the centre. You also receive a digital belt credential for your professional profiles and your belt level is updated in the Shopurai™ community directory.
What does Purple Belt mean professionally?
Purple Belt is the highest designation in the Shopurai™ Belt System. It signifies mastery of all 79 kata across both GUIDE™ and PATHS™, full dual-path commercial excellence and eligibility for Sensei designation. Purple Belt Shopurai™ may be considered for a licence to teach Route to Shopper® formally. It is the credential that signals you are not just a practitioner but a potential leader and guardian of the discipline.
Is this a recognised qualification?
The Shopurai™ Belt System is a proprietary professional credential created by Asbiverse Group, the originator of Route to Shopper®. It is not affiliated with any government qualifications framework. Its value is professional and community-based: it is recognised and respected by those who understand the Route to Shopper® discipline and by the senior commercial leaders who have shaped and endorsed it.
Section 6: Practical Questions
Do I need to have read the book first?
Reading Speak Shopper or Get Shelved: The Shopurai™ Way to Future-Proof Your Sales Career in the Age of AI is a highly recommended foundation for the journey. It introduces the core philosophy, the S.A.L.E.S.™ methodology and the Shopurai™ mindset before you begin structured module work. It is not a formal prerequisite. The Academy e-learning is self-contained and the Commercial Excellence (RiPe) Scorecard is the recommended first step regardless.
Is the learning online or in person?
The Digital component of every belt (Overview Video, Study Guides and e-learning) is fully online and accessible via your Academy dashboard on any device. The Physical workshop component of each belt is in person. Dates and locations for upcoming Physical workshops are published on the platform in advance so you can plan your progression.
Can I progress at my own pace?
Yes, within the structure of the system. The Digital phases are fully self-paced. OJT templates are completed in your own workplace on your own schedule. Physical workshops run on fixed dates, so you select the session that suits you. If your OJT or Action Plan is delayed, the platform sends nudge communications automatically and a facilitator will reach out personally if the delay becomes extended. Extensions are available. The system is designed to accommodate real working life without removing the discipline that makes the journey meaningful.
What if I fall behind?
The platform monitors your progression and sends reminder communications if your OJT has not been started within two weeks of your Digital completion or remains incomplete after six weeks. If your Action Plan becomes overdue by twelve weeks or more, your account is reviewed and you are offered two deadline extensions at no additional charge. No practitioner is left without support.
Can my organisation enrol a team?
Yes. Corporate and team enrolment options are available. The recommended starting point is to have your team members each complete the Commercial Excellence (RiPe) Scorecard. The aggregate results form a clear picture of your organisation’s commercial capability gaps and the most appropriate entry point for your team. Contact the Academy directly to discuss team enrolment and corporate pathway options.
What currency are prices displayed in?
Prices on the Academy are displayed in GBP. International customers will see conversion applied at checkout via Stripe. If you are purchasing on behalf of an organisation and require invoicing in a different currency, contact the Academy to discuss your options.
Who created Route to Shopper® and the Shopurai™ system?
Route to Shopper® and the Shopurai™ system were created by Ankur Shiv Bhandari (ASB), founder of Asbiverse Group and the Commercial Excellence Academy. ASB has spent over two decades in Consumer Goods and Retail commercial roles and built the Route to Shopper® methodology to give commercial professionals a rigorous, structured and values-driven path to mastery in the age of AI.
